Lit by Nature (edited)

This photograph caused me considerable sweat and tears.
A bit of a back-story, just prior to taking this I was in a group of photographers taking pictures of baby owls. As I have said in earlier blog posts, nature photography is great for getting some exercise. Standing around watching baby owls for hours, however cute they maybe, is not exercise. It may be fun but there is a limit.
On deciding to leave we heard that there was a Heron on the shore of the bay behind us about three car lengths away. Turning around, what I saw is almost exactly what you see in the photograph.
The emphasis is on the “almost”. The light was perfect, the Heron was perfect, but the branches of a tree crossed over the Heron. The photograph sat on my computer for considerable time before I convinced myself that advanced Photoshop surgery was appropriate. So the removal of the offending branches must be admitted to in the interest of full disclosure.
The time and effort involved was worth it and was not as difficult as I had expected. I am sure forensics will show what was changed, but I hope it is not too noticeable.
Sometimes it is worthwhile to go the extra step and take the time in post processing to edit reality.
Here is the original unedited version of the photograph.
