There are Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers. The long beak indicates this this is a Hairy. I know that sounds like a punch line to a bad joke but its fact.
Generally you find these birds climbing trees, going round and round the trunk. They move erratically as they peck out insects from inside the tree. I wanted some shots of its full head and formidable claws, easier said than done.
This woodpecker was shot against a background that has gone all painterly and is brighter than the subject but it works. Many people who photograph birds come home with photographs that are disappointing because of the backgrounds they did not notice in the field or because the bird is significantly backlit.
It is important to consider background and lighting but when a bird poses like this there is not much post processing needed. Now if the Pileated Woodpecker would do the same…
