This is one of those singular outcomes that patience and observation can bring to flower photography. The petals of flowers if not transparent are usually not opaque either. The transmission of light through them provides a wonderful accent to a flower subject. That said this is a typical top down flower shot.
While little was done in post processing to this photograph, the light in the center of the flower shines. That is a result of artificial light (flash) where the fall-off was calculated not to affect the background. I could have downplayed (e.g. dodged in Ansel Adams terms) the background etc. to fade it but I do not find it distracting. Some subtle effort on shadows has brought out texture and the grain that was hidden in the original capture.
In my view the artificial light provided the punch that makes the subject glow and separates it from the background while not creating artificiality. Absent the flash, I doubt this flower would have been as remarkable as it is.
