There is nothing like eye-to-eye contact with your subject. I was lucky that the reflections around the bird were not more distracting. Moving lower to get eye level with the bird would have been even better but there is only so much kneeling in mud that you want to be doing! The Bokeh (the out of focus background) helps lift the picture.
For photos like this, moody lighting and selective focus help to isolate the face of your subject, as true for humans as for animals.
