These yellow jacket mimic flies (Hover Flies) are great actors. I have captured them in all sorts of situations, and they never cease to amaze. They are surprisingly small, less than half a centimeter in most cases, with the female being bigger.
It’s a challenge getting them in focus, as they are too small for auto-focus to work all the time. They tend to be found on things easily buffeted by the wind and they are almost always in motion. From what I am told they are completely benign garden insects that pollinate plants.
The lack of light fall off in the background is due to the background being close enough to catch the light. The diffusion on the flash worked well, creating nice soft light. Significant detail was enhanced with tonal contrast etc. in post processing.
