In school you were probably taught about the phenomenon of refraction. You place a pencil in a glass of water and the pencil will look broken or disjointed at the water line. For a more scientific explanation check the web.
The frog’s expression is entirely due to refraction. Taking objects semi-submerged means taking account of refraction, it can certainly lead to some nasty reflections in the water and less than pleasing results. Thankfully, modest movement of the camera angle may make it less obtrusive or more pleasing to the eye.
Refraction is a phenomenon that can occur with many animals including wading birds, turtles etc. It’s something to be mindful of and work with rather than be surprised by later.
