Preparing for the Luge

These hover flies are quite something, every so often I have caught one or two in odd positions, begging for a caption. Here the fly is cleaning the sensors on his appendages, prior to going on another scavenging hunt.
This photograph was taken when I was struggling to get a grasp of artificial lighting. Struggling because when something worked I could not replicate it elsewhere. I have yet to meet a photographer who has not at some time gone through this, its part of the learning curve and if you fall off you have to get back on. When you can replicate it elsewhere and can describe your technique to others, then maybe you have cracked the secret. Before then you read, you experiment, you ask questions, eventually by luck and then by design you succeed. This is why photography is a true craft.
