When you realize what goes into landscape photography it adds to your appreciation of the results. For a start you need great light, a realistic sky – blue, broken up by clouds, and some foreground interest.
I keep hearing graduated neutral density filters used on the camera are a vast improvement over the software equivalent. They are a bit unwieldy and awkward to use (e.g. knowing what to measure for exposure). Here I used a neutral density filter to darken the sky and still get an overall good exposure. The lines going in different directions provided my foreground interest and the farms on the horizon, purpose to the photograph.
The road trips to find locations and take the pictures are fun; you get to discover all kinds of back roads, antique shops, and quaint towns.
