Ladies Preening (a note on Group Portraits)

If you have ever taken a group picture you know there are two challenges.
You need your subjects roughly in the same plane or you need a very deep depth of field; the latter may affect the background bringing more of it into focus. The background being in or out of focus is an issue that may matter.
Secondly, you need everyone’s eyes open, or doing something interesting.
For humans often the best pose is one that looks and feels awkward from every angle except the camera’s. For animals our only option, as we cannot pose them, is patience.
In most reserves ducks are ubiquitous and often when you ask people what they have seen, they’ll say only ducks! Ducks may not always be the most interesting to see, but that is the challenge. Make the ducks interesting!
