In flight (four photographs)

While walking in the darkest part of the forest I saw dragonflies hovering every few feet, some were more cautious than others. I had my flash, but was not quite sure how to use it under those conditions and ended up under exposing most of the shots. But how cool is it to get dragonflies in mid-air and face on! This is one of those opportunities I would not have missed for anything. Maybe I will get another chance and be more skilled with my flash, but I think the odds are against these circumstances being duplicated. My love of dragonflies continues to increase.
Face on is incredible. What ISO and shutter speed were you using?

Great shots! Those are not easy ones to get, especially in low light. I’m always curious what peoples success rate is. Did you have to take a lot of shots to get these beautiful ones.

Beautiful! I have noticed there have been more dragonflies than usual flying around this year, they move so fast. I am always amazed when I see the talent of those that can get there photo when they are sitting on a plant, but mid-air, great job.

Thanks. If they had been flying normally i could not have done it, they were literally hanging in the air not a for long but long enough.

Very nice! That’s one thing I have not shot, but would like to obviously. Too married to my reverse lens. 🙂
Those shooting conditions sound really tough. Do you typically use flash on dragonfly shots?

Thanks. I only use flash when there is simply not other way to light the scene or capture action. Its too messy a technology for the fast decisions required, and many time leads to a touch of unrealistic lighting. With dragonflies it exaggerates the bright circles in the eyes created by the ambient light. Moreover flash highlights all the dust and grub these insects pick up along the way.

Thanks. They are from the order Ondonata ,eating teeth ones, and they were once thought to sew people’s lips shut. Quite a history.

Awesome shots, Victor. It seems that you and I have been shooting similar subjects. There is something really cool about dragonflies in flight and most folks wouldn’t even think of trying to capture them in the air.

It’s like a miracle to see those four wings working in independent syncopation. Fantastic capture 🙂

Thanks. I was lucky. If the wings were stopped by a higher shutter speed the dragonflies might have looked dead.
