Cabbage Whites (Pieris rapae) are marvelous beasts; they flit around like crazy, wisps of white all over the fields. They also have amazing checkerboard eyes. Finding a butterfly like this sitting calmly out in the open is rare and rarer still when it sticks around to gets its portrait taken. No matter the extent of your preparation for an image like this in the field, much depends on the post processing. In post you need to extract detail and balance the lighting across the breadth of the butterfly with special attention to the eye, without this work the detail is very difficult to see.
