The One That Got Away (Three Photographs)

This rather colorful stinkbug was singularly unhelpful. It was wandering all over the place never giving me the opportunity for fine adjustment. That said its unusual coloring and texture were interesting enough for me. When I first began taking photographs of insects, I got more shots of them moving away than coming towards me. I suspect I am not alone, it takes some effort to get things just the way you want them.

  1. These all look excellent to me, Victor. You are too modest.

  4. Lovely series, the backgrounds are great, and you did well with an uncooperative subject; nothing much you can do with a prima donna stink bug. 🙂

  6. Victor, you may be interested to know this is an immature true bug (hemiptera) which is why it looks different from the adults you’ve previously shown. At various stages they shed their skin so they can grow larger and each of these stages is called an instar, there are usually five. This looks like the penultimate instar, the final stage before becoming an adult. At the adult stage it will have fully developed wing-cases.

    • Thanks for confirming its a true bug. The detail is much appreciated. I find the guides explain but seldom describe the instars.
