As summer wanes into fall, one technique I like to try is taking leaves with narrow depth of field creating a colorful background. It sounds simple and in technical terms it is. It takes little time to set up and try a few shots at various apertures to make sure at least some of the leaves are in focus and that the right level of in-camera color saturation is achieved. In practice it may take several attempts with different situations before I get something I am happy to show off. It’s a great way to learn about apertures and do something artsy. As the winter comes along the harsher light provides starker compositional opportunities with branches, ice etc…
