Bearded

One of the comments I received on this blog was that a bee I had shot looked like it wore a fur coat; this bee seems to have acquired a beard.
One of the issues with processing bees and furry animals is how to manage the sharpening. Selective sharpening is best as the fur can easily get over sharpened. In this case and due mostly to the original raw image it’s on the verge of being over sharpened. Sharpening is a science into itself, there are many tools/methods to use, and more than one was tried in this case. It is a subject worth reading up on and more importantly practicing so you can see the different results and find those tools/methods that work for you. The main methods in Photoshop are: shake reduction, smart sharpening, high pass filtering and unsharp mask (some of which can be combined). The sharpening in Lightroom is extremely good. One needs to keep in mind that many add-on filters from Nik, OnOne, MacPhun also add sharpening.
Love this photo! Fuzzy and cute in a buggy sort of way!

The only one you mentioned that I did not ever try is the new Shake Reduction. I get into a pattern on how I process and when a new one is introduced, I always don’t jump on it right away. I keep reading on it so will try it soon. Your bee does look like it needs a shave. Cute little girl and wonderful eye level image.

Shake reduction does not always work, watch for halos, but when it does its is often incredible. You can paint away some halos. Watch the amount of reduction on automatic over 32 can be problematic, no always but most of the time. Good luck and ask if you have questions.
