Absolutely Still

Absolutely StillTo view more of my photography please click on www.rakmilphotography.com

It is not uncommon for animals to hide in plain sight, holding perfectly still. Remaining quiet and still is also a great way for people to allow animals to get used to them and sometimes get closer. This squirrel like many others is not yet ready to be fed and figures if he stays completely still I will ignore him. I assume he does not take into account that his black fur stands out.

  1. We had a lovely black squirrel in our yard and one day our dog caught and killed it. I have never been so mad in my life. Okay maybe once or twice. But perhaps the lack of camouflage is what doomed the squirrel–it stood out, and it didn’t run away fast enough. Darn it.

    • Thanks. Fact is that black and grey squirrels , we get both, are just color variants.

  5. Squirrels and even birds sometimes stay still for a long time. I haven’t figured out why. One rainy day a junco was absolutely still perched at the bird feeder, letting rain drops run down its head without moving for at least 10 minutes.

  11. Black squirrels are a rare treat around here. Your photo is wonderful – I love that you were able to have the weathered stump in focus as well. Not to mention black is a tough color to shoot clearly. Nice!

    • Thanks. From comments black squirrels are rare in many places. If they sit still long enough you get to practice your art.

  17. I love the jagged trunk that he is perched on. It’s amazing what is common to us is rare elsewhere. I think there are 3 black squirrels that are regular visitors to my backyard. 🙂
