More Monarchs (Three Photographs)

Monarchs are beautiful and it is no surprise that as with many other butterflies they are shot from above (the entomological dorsal view) because their wings are so dramatic. There is another reason in some cases to avoid portraiture. The eyes of Monarchs are very hard to discern, they are checkered, but predominantly black and they blend to be almost invisible. I prefer my animals with discernible eyes, and the best way to do that with monarchs, is to shoot them from the side and even then it does not work all the time.

  3. And now with their very lives at risk, this is a great post. Their habitats are dwindling at rates that have encroached dramatically on their population.

    • It may, I hear, be improving. Nonetheless the more that is done on way stations the more likely a resurgence.
