Montreal’s outdoor staircases are legendary and there are many stories about how they came about. None of which I might add explains why they makes sense for a city that regularly digs itself out from feet of snow, and ice. Maybe that is why I prefer this in black and white.

  1. This isn’t about colour but design, shapes and textures. Perfect for monochrome.

  2. It is about lines, shapes, textures….but I still prefer the colour version!

  3. My preference is for the monochrome version. The black and white emphasises all the patterns, shapes and intersecting lines in the image. Really good photograph.

The story I heard about the outdoor staircase was to save heating cost, if they had been indoor then they would need to heat that space in winter ……. but they are a pain in the neck in the winter and for movers

  6. I think I like the monochrome one here better because the shapes and lines seem to be more conducive to b&W but that’s just me. They are both great shots. Well, it was a great shot to start with!

    • Thanks. If I put them on my website I will have to think carefully which ones to post.

    • That’s why I have a monochrome category…I post sometimes the same image twice, once in the monochrome and once in whatever other gallery it falls under.
