Merganser (and a word about shape)

Merganser (shape)To view more of my photography please click on www.rakmilphotography.com

I captured a few shots of this bird before it moved impossibly far away. Photography is mostly about light (tone, color, shadows, mid-tones and highlights), but it’s also about shape and design. This is a photograph where if it were not for the position (shape) the animal took I would have not have paid it any consideration.

  1. I love these mergensers. This is a female one. And I really like what you have to say about shape. That is so true.

  2. Interesting looking bird. Part of the king fisher family? I don’t think they are over here?

  5. Every year we have at least one pair of Merganzers on the river. Love their little brown fuzzball babies, which ride the fast currents like little brown corks!

  6. I’m guessing that seconds before you shot this photo, this female merganser had her bill tucked under her wing.

I’ve seen them doing that, and thought they were sleeping, or grooming, but I now think that they might do it to spot prey.

I’ve watched them drift and paddle with their bills under their wing and an eye toward water.

Regardless, you are right about the interesting shape she makes, with her funky head feathers and her neck twisted backwards it makes for an interesting photo.

    Nice work!
