One of things I like about the squirrel portraits I have taken is that even if it is a bit of an illusion, the shots seem to be taken at eye level or thereabouts. The trick is to back up, the farther back you are, the lower and smaller a distant object appears and the shallower the angle.  With a telephoto lens, your subject will appear to be at eye level and still fill enough of the frame.
