Chickadee Condo

If you look behind the bird you will see a very small hole definitely smaller than the bird. It’s a nest carved out of a dead tree. Some woodpeckers probably made the hole, but this chickadee and its mate have selected it for their home. We watched them taking turns going to the nest. Getting a photograph of them in the hole would have required a tripod and amazing reflexes; they were in and out in seconds. In large part the speed is probably to ensure predators do not identify the nest. We passed by the nest several times after this, but only saw it being used again months later. Sometimes we could hear the chicks inside the trunk.
