Northern Flicker (Four Photographs)

We had heard about a flicker nest and walked by it several times. Only once did an adult visit it while we were there. Some people stood for hours waiting for an arrival or departure. There is always a lot to see in the nature reserve, so standing around for long periods almost never makes sense to me. The photographs pretty much tell the story. The patterns of color on the bird are very dramatic. I take most of my photographs in the reserve hand-held and this was one time I wish I had brought the tripod – for the sake of my arms! We have been back several times, one person said that they had seen the flicker again but for weeks the hole in the tree remained seemingly empty and then…. In my post this coming Monday you will see the chicks being fed and calling out for food.
