Brightening up the day (Three Photographs)

Happily day lilies are far from rare. On a dull day they brighten the landscape. Given their detail they make for great subjects close up or from a distance. More importantly they age with grace and vibrance. To get a sort of faded effect you can coat a glass filter with Vaseline for a soft focus shot or hold some mesh over the lens. This was fashionable in portrait photography; now we use other tools in post-processing like negative clarity, blurs and glamour glow for the same effect. Better yet we can do it in camera with selective focus. Any and all of these effects can be used on flowers but sometimes it’s not needed as the flower stands out. For myself the choice depends on the flower, the background and the atmosphere of the photograph. Each of these photographs was post-processed differently all with the aim of focusing attention on the flower.
