Black-Crowned Night Heron (Two Photographs)

These herons are colored dull blue/gray and white. While majestic they are essentially two toned, so having done the first shot in color I decided to do another in black and white. Oddly, I find them both equally dramatic, equally representative of the bird but different in impact. In photography, especially nature photography, it is nice to have choice, to take very similar pictures and have them speak in different graphic languages.
Quite an elusive bird. I’ve photographed the species only twice. One female and one male in different years.

Usually less rare where I live, but this year, very rare.

I love these magnificent birds. We have one that comes to our pond occasionally. Nice photos Victor.

I like both images but the color allows me to understand that there is a log behind the bird. The b&w is not a clear or does not have enough contrast to tell.

Wow! Love the first one where you can see the crest feathers. The curve follows through to the downward facing beak. Lovely!

These are my fave herons but I’ve only seen one in my life. Great composition and it would be interesting to see the b&w one with a red eye just for comparison.

I miss the red eye in the black and white one. How about just keeping the red 🙂

I find selective coloring removes the photo from reality. Though I like their eyes as well.
