Mayflies

The photo above was challenging, There were two mayflies on either side of the leaf and the chance of getting everything in focus was nil. Moreover the subject dictated the composition even if I cropped it slightly. Given the circumstances, the lighting had to be complimented with flash to light the foreground. My thinking at the time was that the natural symmetry needed to be captured; that the competing lighting, sunlight in the background, flash in the foreground spoke to the rarity of the scene. People might wonder if they were seeing a reflection. From the moment I saw the scene I wanted a photograph that would cause people to think, even while the subjects were starkly apparent.

  2. I like this one. Delicate. The backlighting gives it a fairy look.

  3. This is a fabulous shot! Your eye and patience were well rewarded! I like the monochrome – do you shoot in black and white? – or convert?

    • Thank you. I convert. I don’t like the camera filters/styles much, I shoot in neutral and then edit.
