A Whimsical Thought on Editing (Five Photographs)

Our photographs should tell a story and/or have impact, physical context is not always needed to do this. Take an ordinary flower, if it’s beautiful is context needed? We hope it speaks for itself. However, we can frame our flower or edit that photograph for mood and change the story and maybe even create a context. Not all people enjoy editing and not all photographers go beyond doing the absolute minimum to remain true to their subject. Then there are those whose editing defines the photograph, crafts the result and adds mood. It is an art form. In my case the move into Black and White Photography has been a step along that path (other roads needs to be followed as well). So today I offer five photographs that due to framing and/or editing show modest efforts to bring out something more.

I am also an amateur who loves nature photography. I have been using the free program GIMP. It’s user friendly and there are several tutorials online. I downloaded it for free at http://www.gimp.org/ 🙂

Great post! I have been experimenting with editing my photos more and more. I try to follow the ‘less is more’ approach with my nature photos. I really like your black and white shots. It really gives the photo a whole different feel. Thanks for sharing!

What photo editing program do you recommend for an amateur who loves nature photography (I love taking pictures like yours)? But I don’t want it to be one I need a college course to understand. I have just been using iPhoto.

I get the point that Photoshop is hobby unto itself. Lightroom by Adobe on the other hand is extremely good value, and I believe can be bought as a stand alone one time buy. Once your photographs are catalogued the rest is pretty intuitive. More importantly there are hundreds of free resources on the web that will help you with the program, starting with free training at Adobe. That is what you get for buying a good program superior support.

Yes, but it takes care. Have a look at MacPhun snapheal, an app which works with LR. But to be clear yes it is possible in LR.
