Assassin Bug Dining on a Fly (Two Photographs)

Not everyone will find insects as interesting as I do. If you spend long enough in nature you will see both the good and the harsh reality. The largest assassin bugs I am told are less than a centimeter long. I did not measure this one. The scene you see in the second photograph is occurring in a very small area easily missed. From a photographic perspective it’s hard to get a depth of field and enough light for everything to be in focus; the nature of the bug, shiny and translucent makes for more problems with light and focus. I have taken several shots of these creatures and more may appear on my blog. In my view, taken hand-held, an insect this size is about the smallest thing you want to try to photograph. Assassin bugs do move about and when they choose to react to you, like many true bugs, their solution is to turn their back or hide under a leaf.
