The Most Intrepid of Birds (Three Photographs)

All of the Belted Kingfishers I have seen have noticed my presence and flown off instantly. And they fly fast, very fast. I have seen shots of them in flight and I am in awe. There is a run-off pond at the nature reserve we visit. We always stop there and have seen foxes and other interesting things. We were told a Kingfisher had taken up residence on a pole in the water so off we went and no sooner had we seen it it flew off. Over the course of weeks we made return visits. We met people who took lawn chairs and tripods and waited (to no avail) for it to return. I took to marching down the path with camera to my eye and taking the shot if I saw the bird and hoping I got it. Over those several weeks I got four shots of the bird, three are here. In my favorite shot above, its eyelid is down hence the grey eye! The darn bird may come back and I may get other shots, but it is certainly an elusive target.

  1. Great shots! I always love hearing them announce their presence when we walk along the Lehigh river. Coolest looking birds!

  2. I ADORE these birds! We have some (or one?) that sits out on a tree above the pond and dive bombs in the pond to search for food. Fun to watch!

  3. Your perseverance paid off! I love hearing them when I visit Orcas Island, and watch their flight/feeding pattern with awe. Never have seen one sitting still or up close like this. Bravo!

  5. Yes, very shy and elusive. BTW, the first shot is a male, the other two female (males have no rusty sides) so it looks like you’ve captured a breeding pair!
