Progress of an Ant (Two Photographs)

What interests me about the ants I have photographed is their speed, their determination and their caution. I have recently been working with my wife, an excellent bug spotter, on close-up photography. We now have similar gear (105mm lenses, soft boxes, flashes and cameras). You can imagine that the things you do automatically are hard to teach. I am happy to say that things have moved along well and while everyone who shoots insects close-up has the frustrations of missed shots, bad settings, and uncooperative subjects, we have had more success than failure. We must look the pair with our cameras/soft boxes; calling out insect names and taking turns in photographing what we find. This past summer we moved quickly from gear issues into technique and deeper into an interest in the insects we shoot. We have pushed ourselves out on days that otherwise were poor prospects, and finally we have been respectful enough of the insects we meet not to have an unfortunate encounter for them or us.
