Today’s cameras do a lot of processing in-camera and while it’s possible to adjust those settings, for example color profiles and camera profiles (vivid, natural, portrait etc.), these profiles have an effect on the range of light the camera captures. Shooting Raw as opposed to JPG (which I recommend for all kinds of photography) with the natural or neutral camera profiles provide the best start if you plan on post-processing your shots. The image may lack contrast and be a bit duller initially when seen on the screen but you have the latitude in post processing to bring back the color and your vision. Adding contrast, clarity, and saturation can be done in most processing programs; Nik’s Viveza software offers a very effective tool in selective contrast, brightness, sharpening etc. I used it on this photograph where I wanted to open up the shadows and bring back the color in the leaves.
