Once in a while when I post photographs of insects people point out that they are pests, I respond that I am shooting in a nature reserve where nature does its thing. I have no idea what butterfly or moth emerges after this caterpillar ages but its likely to be as colorful. Nature photography does subject you to the good and the bad. However much you feel sorry for animals that cannot get away or find shelter from predators or the weather that’s the natural world. These harsher sides of nature are areas to explore when the opportunity arises. In all the codes of conduct I have read about nature photography none have said to stay away from reality except to say things like don’t disturb the lion when it’s eating.

Hello Victor, I was going to mention this was a sawfly larva but I see both Michael and Andrew have already pointed this out. If you ignore the front clasper-type jointed (true-legs) of which lepidoptera and symphyta both have 3 pairs and then count the remaining pro-legs, if you can count S A W F LY (i.e. it has at least 6 pairs or more) then it is usually a sawfly. Butterflies and moths usually have 5 pairs or fewer.

Yeah no feeding the lions! This is a wonderful capture. It appears it’s eating the leaf on its way.

Except it’s a sawfly larvae and not a caterpillar. My taxonomy needs work.

I agree that this is a sawfly larva. I get them on my yellow irises in the pond.
