Surfing and Horizons (Two Photographs)

This Black-Crowned Heron looks like he might enjoy surfing. Many photography tips talk about getting horizons straight in your shots, especially in landscapes. This may be a bit confusing when shooting ducks and birds, as you have to guess where the horizon is. Fortunately some post processing programs have tools to help with this. In the first shot out of the camera it does look more like the heron is surfing than in the second where the horizon is slightly different. I think this underlines the creative value of setting a good horizon, or the impact a slight change can make.

  1. I would align the tips of the bills in the bird and the reflection vertically in the top photo to straighten it. Otherwise, lovely shots.

    • A bit of an exaggeration to make a point. Born from the fact big lens are hard to hold straight 😄

  2. Good advice. I try to align the ripples in the water, but that only works when there is water, right? 🙂
