Who comes up with these names? These birds deserve better. The washed out background that highlights the bird is due to spot metering a back-lit subject.  Spot metering is an obvious solution when the subject is back-lit, otherwise the bird would go dark and the everything else would be better exposed. With spot metering the bird is well exposed, and most everything else is washed out. You seldom have choices with backgrounds; your ability to move can often be limited for fear of frightening off the birds. Spot metering is one way to make a bird stand out and a lack of colorful background work.

  3. Very descriptive name, however! Out of dozens, one of the few warblers that are easy to remember. Beautiful, clear photos that really show detail.

  5. Thanks for the tip on spot metering. I’m an avid birder and often struggle with different lighting. And I agree. .. these birds deserve a better name. I love these guys. Great photos!
