The Lonely Tree (Two Photographs)

It’s surprising how hard it is to find a solitary tree with a good background. I made modest changes to this picture, a little bit of shadow opening and some contrast adjustments in Nik’s Viveza (Tonality Pro for the Black and White). Apart from that it’s as shot. The photo was taken in the fall with an old Nikon 24-70mm lens, my favorite landscape tool although it has lots of other uses. The newer version has vibration control, is much larger and more costly. This one has served me well and is my go-to lens for a walk or drive.

  1. Very true of trees. Since its winter here in the Northern Hemisphere I’ve been looking at the California Live Oaks that are bare of leaves. There’s one tree I noticed that is up on a hill that might work for a stand alone.
