Mayfly (and more about eyes)

Like most things what is true in full size photography of animals changes in close-up photography/macro. Several insects have fluid eyes that will never look fully in focus, focusing just behind the eye helps. Secondly, in close-up photography of insects there is a need to use artificial light, which almost always creates a highlight and with some luck and care a catch light in the eye. This is a mayfly whose relatively huge eyes were always going to be the focus of the photograph. By bringing attention to them, in this case by the way they were photographed and lit, make the photo.

  2. Great close-up, I love the detail of this fascinating creature. The success of many species (mostly birds and fish) depend on the abundance of mayflies.
