American Goldfinch

The Goldfinch is one of my favorite birds and not just because it looks great, but because of the challenge. They are wary like all small birds, more likely to stay put if seen from a distance. They also tend to be hidden in trees. The lighting can be a problem and with a narrow depth of field it is easy to get halos around the edge of the bird when sharpening due to some back lighting. I have had some luck with them high up in trees, but at eye-level it is difficult. The photo is a little noisy but none of my software will cure that without reducing details in the bird’s fine feathers. My books tell me that this is a mature male and he certainly looks self-assured.
