If you want great bokeh it is said you need a lens with nine aperture blades. The shape of the blades and their number affect bokeh, except when the lens is wide open (lowest aperture/Fstop) because then there are no blades; seven blades at a larger aperture will not give as good bokeh as nine blades at the same aperture. All true but is it worth the money to go this far? There are other reasons to buy expensive lenses: resolution, quality of the optics, lack of chromatic aberration etc. I do not shoot to get great bokeh but I am happy if it enhances the photo. With sharpness a bit of out of focus background can give depth and a lot of bokeh would negate that.
