Noise

Noise is created by stressing the sensor to see more light than it was designed for (more modern sensors can be pushed to much higher ISOs, without much noise). We all get noise in our pictures usually in the shadows. Too much noise removal and your image will be soft/smooth. Sometimes like old film grain (a factor in the manufacture of the film or how it was processed) as in the image above, the noise is a positive element in a photograph.
