Male Cardinal (Three Photographs)

A decent background, catch lights in the eyes, limited distractions and an active stance by the subject. You cannot ask for much more. Many articles I’ve read speak about totally clear backgrounds, no distractions whatsoever. It is possible to get these kinds of shots in the wild, but it’s rare; more frequently they are taken at feeders or created in Photoshop. Now I did clean up some of the background and I worked on the eyes in one photograph. I also removed one branch. These are the subtle changes that give some photographs more coherence.

  2. Beautiful bird, singing his heart out. Do you have to work with the saturation on red subjects? I find it is hard to get an accurate representation as the camera doesn’t seem to ‘see’ as we do.

    • Modern digital cameras sometimes have trouble with primary colors. Saturation is not always the best answer. If you have color modes in your camera they are usually landscape, saturated , neutral etc. The normal, neutral color mode is best. They have different names depending on the camera. I shoot in neutral, when I correct for contrast and exposure the color comes out perfectly. I also shoot at 400 ISO that alone gives depth to the color. I should write a blog on this but it won’t be for a while. Hope this helps.

      • Always at 400 ISO? I thought that made grainy photos. There is so much to learn!

        • The higher the ISO the more noise, but newer camera sensors can handle higher ISOs and a little noise never hurts, noise removal in many software packages does a good job on noise. Hope this helps.
