I believe this to be an Appalachian Brown Butterfly. It’s the first I have seen of this kind of butterfly. With larger insects in bushes one of the problems can be shadows. This was taken with a 300mm at F5 on a cropped sensor. The long lens did not give much room for changing my position and the far part of the wings was in shadow. The magic of Lightroom is that it handles shadows quite well, and a very simple adjustment tackled most of the problem although not removing it completely. I took several shots of this butterfly, getting closer to it each time. The nearest I could approach was five feet, a drawback of long lenses. Cropping brought the subject closer and allowed me to position it where I wanted it in the frame.
