Female Woodpecker (Three Photographs) and a word on light

Pileated Woodpecker-3To view more of my photography please click on www.rakmilphotography.com

You come across a magnificent bird begging for its photograph to be taken. The light is awkward and while it highlights some features, the confusion of branches, the way the light hits some of the surrounding objects creates halos and/or shadows. These are the sort of things you cannot fix in the field without changing position and potentially losing the bird. In post processing you can darken the trees that need it and you can soften halos. However, in the end perfection is not possible. I think most people would be happy to have been this close to a female pileated woodpecker and take the peripheral issues in their stride.

  8. I say, ‘well done!’ as I can never get anywhere near them without them flying off. They are such amazing birds – a giant woodpecker with a prehistoric look.

    • Thanks. Those we see seem a bit distracted. Or at least ignore us.

      • I wonder if maybe they see more people and are used to them? Ours are so wild.

        • One other thing to the east of us all the turtles who see people jump in the water. In the west they ignore people and continue sunning themselves. Might be due to where they have reason to fear people.

          • That is interesting. Makes me wonder if it is learned or inherent – guess we’ll never know!

  11. I like your shots just as they are. Sometimes we try to over post-process.
