How Much is Instinct (Two Photographs)

Insects act by instinct, but how much of what we do in photography becomes instinctual? How much of the way we compose and the settings we use is instinct? When we have to take shots quickly and take many of the same subject, ever notice that the first shot is sometimes the better shot, the one you took instinctively? It is arguable that as a photographer becomes more and more familiar with their gear, with their style, with their subjects, that some things are just taken for granted. This is my excuse for not always remembering how I took a specific shot. It sometimes makes things hard to explain but I am sure we all do it.
I think our instincts build as we grow in technical proficiency.

Great subject for a post, Victor. Kind of like muscle memory, with practice, it becomes like instinct. Love the sweat bees!

You are so right: many times I have found that the first shot is the best, even though the ones that follow required more planning and decisions.

I consider myself to be an opportunistic shooter–I generally don’t plan out my photos in advance and often have to react quickly to a situation that presents itself. I think you are quite right that much of what we do is instinctual, especially with regard to composition. I will sometimes let my photography mentor look at my images straight off of the card. That lets her see what I was attempting to do in camera and what my shots look like before I mess with them in postprocessing. When I started shooting more seriously, I was overwhelmed by the number of choices I had to make and had to think consciously about each camera setting. Now, thanks to instinct and experience, I make a lot of unconscious choices very quickly.
