Butterfly and Black and White

Black and white treatments can give depth to a photograph. I processed this photo in black and white and I noticed not just more detail but also more depth. We can debate the merits of black and white photography for butterflies, but it does show more than one attribute of processing photos this way. Black and white can make subjects stand out against the background, even if the background, as in this photograph is a muted shade of gray. I do not discount the color version, it certainly has merit. I only wanted to point out some of the tributes of a monochrome treatment.

  1. I like them both, but I see your point about the black and white effect.

  2. Comment on the black and white. It works well in BW. I would try brightening the blues to bring out the flower.

  3. If it has two spots I learned that it is a female cabbage white. A male only has one spot (one syllable).
