There are Almost Always Options (Six Photographs)

There are six photographs here and nine different approaches to the same flower: color, black and white and then the perspectives on the flower. In reading tips on photography, one of points often made is that there is always an ideal perspective and often with flowers that ideal is stated as not being top down. In other words, any other perspective is better. Similarly, I have read that if a photograph is suitable for black and white it is unsuitable for color or vice versa. In my view both points are nonsense. It’s not just that there are exceptions to these points, it’s that the impact of a photo is in the eyes of the photographer and their audience. The photographer may be influenced by what they think their audience might like, but the artist still has to make the photograph. Thinking about perspective and the many ways one object can be photographed is one of the better methods for making a photograph.
