Dragonflies (and a word on making something stand out)

The usual way we make things stand out is through depth of field, so that only our subject is in focus. The second is through contrast, contrasting colors or light. Another way is getting the objects against a clean background. Lastly we can use the shape and form of the subjects surrounding it in such a way that the subject’s shape is off-center or out of kilter from the background. With insects we only get a few, if any, chances to change our position and get a better perspective/background for our subject. It takes patience and a bit of luck to find the circumstance you can work with.

  1. Beautiful shots of the dragonflies, Victor. I know well the challenges of trying to make them stand out from their backgrounds. It helps when they perch at the top of the vegetation like the one in the middle, but even then there is a challenge, because the slightest wind causes movement.

  2. As your first photograph shows, the view of a dragonfly from below can highlight the venation in the wings.

  8. Wow. These are so sharp and vivid. Most people see dragonflies flitter by (or don’t even notice them) and have no idea how detailed and colorful they are.
