Female Red-Winged Blackbird (Two Photographs)

Having profiled some male blackbirds its time to show off the female. I recall wondering only a few years ago what kind of bird this was and never thinking it was a red-winged blackbird. I understand a lot of new birders fall into the same trap. It was early this spring and the females we saw kept themselves well into the bush and flew away at the slightest sound or movement. I was lucky enough to spot this one. While the picture was almost monochrome (Sepia?), I felt it better for the background and the bird to restrict myself to color processing. I also decided to keep to an 8 1/2 by 11 format. Even if it meant some elements were out of focus it emphasizes the shyness of these birds.
These are lovely Victor. Interestingly we have many of them near home on Kiawah but they look quite different. Maybe I’m seeing the males.

They are beautiful shots of the female. They nest in the reeds of the pond at the bottom of our street but I only spot the vivid males. The rest are camouflaged.

That female gave me fits for a long time. She still trips me up now and then. Great photo.
