Ravens Have More than Character (Nine Photographs)

These photos seem to prove that Ravens have emotions. I was told that the Raven on the left was injured, but there was no obvious sign of that. The Ravens, and I can find no other word for it, nuzzled each other and called out to each other. Finally the bird on the right flew off and the other bird moved to a lower branch. I was shooting these with a new camera and new lens so some settings were not perfect as I tried to adjust for different light. The shots were taken in a forest and the light was filtered and changing. I considered doing the entire series in black and white but I was pleased with some of the color shots so I kept them.
These are among the best of your photos! You’ve captured the essence of the birds.

Great shots and wonderful birds. Check out Bernd Heinrich’s ‘Mind of the Raven’, if you can get hold of a copy.

I think I prefer the color ones here as there is much more “life” to them. Great raven shots. I love the croaking sounds they make.

Thanks. It was the last black and white that convinced me to do a few in monochrome.

What a wonderful series, Victor! And I think it proves the hypothesis that they have emotions 🙂

Thanks – there is a good book Mind of the Raven by Bernd Heinrich. But I was not a believer until I saw it.

What a great set of photos Victor! I love the colour and the black and white also. They all work really well. It’s great when you can capture animal behaviour like this.

Wonderful. I once experienced something very similar with a couple elephants in the zoo. The tenderness was so obvious. It’s great that you were there to observe their behavior. Sometimes we get much more than photographs!

Awesome shots of the interactions between these two beautiful birds. It’s a good reminder that these creatures that we photograph are individuals and not simply members of a particular species.

Fantastic shots capturing the emotions of these ravens, among the most intelligent birds. I like the color ones as they tend to give a bit more reality to your photos.
