Flicker Nest (Three Photographs)

You could be mistaken for thinking that this was a house hunting trip, it’s more like checking out the summer cottage, as the birds nested in the same place last year. Still a lot of attention is being paid to the pad. This nest is just off a path and very high up. Given the nature of the surroundings, it’s impossible in the space available for a horde of photographers to gather. You also have to make do with only a few angles where you have line of sight on the nest. I did very little in post-processing to these photos; I did remove a pinkish tint in Photoshop with levels.

  6. Gorgeous plumage – it is interesting that the tree tries to heal over the hole and they’ve made fresh chips into it. Looks like a no-win for the tree!

    • Thanks. True the tree gets hit, but it’s not in great shape. Another nearby tree had pileated and wood duck nest dug into it.

      • Condo units! It looks to be poplar, which is a nice soft wood, and easy for digging. 😉

  8. Beautiful photos – maybe a lucky chance but the subtle colours with splashes of red and yellow work perfectly.
