Wild Turkey (Four Photographs)

This was not the first or last time I saw this turkey (I posted some head shots a month ago on my blog – https://rakmilphotography.wordpress.com/2016/06/07/turkey-three-photographs-and-more-on-post-processing-photographs/). I was worried about never getting this bird in good light. High ISO caused noise, passing clouds changed the light, shadows obscured the wonderful feathers, and the smallish head was prominent only from the side or when the bird decided to call out and stretch its neck. I was lucky to get any useful shots.

Turkeys are remarkable birds – alert, smart, real survivors – and great plumage, too. I like the backlit wattle in the first shot – it glows!

Thanks glad you like them. They are not easy to shoot given they like the dark forest.

It seems the best time to see them is breeding season, otherwise they are quite elusive. I once had a male displaying for a female strolling across my backyard, great photo op! Females with chicks sometime come through and in winter occasionally they’ll peck under the bird feeder. One memorable flock had 43 birds!

Wow. A flock. We had a male and female, this was the male, it seems to have flown the coop.

Yeah, the males hang around for the fun, then book out before the eggs hatch! ;-D
