Comma Butterflies (Two Photographs)

One amazing thing about many insects is their ability to hide in plain sight. If this butterfly closes its wings completely it is indistinguishable from bark. But when it flies you notice the bright orange warning on the outside of its wings to stay away. In this case I saw the butterfly flying and followed it to its perch. Approaching slowly with a 70-200mm lens on a high ISO I managed these two shots where you see quite a bit of the insect including its checkerboard eyes. Unfortunately it’s aging and its wings show tearing.

  1. Wow! That is some great camouflage. And you must have Spiderman vision to catch it. Great job!
