Kingfisher (Eight Photographs)

This is probably one of the more frustrating birds to photograph. They are never close enough even with a 500mm lens, at least in my experience. They fly extremely fast, and though they may sit in one place for a time they fidget a lot. Processing these involved fewer steps than normal but even minimal sharpening was hard to apply without exaggerating the detail. So in some cases I left well enough alone. These shots were taken over three days. They are more than likely not the same bird as there are three birds in the area that I know of. I saw them fish but could not react fast enough to get a shot and of the shots I did get they were hunting dragonflies not fish. Their white feathers meant I needed to under expose to keep detail and that proved problematic as the light changed and foiled some of my attempts. The high ISO I needed to shoot the birds against the backgrounds produced a lot of noise and that has affected image quality a bit. Still very happy with the outcome using the Nikon 200-500 lens.
We have a kingfisher that likes to sit on the tree next to one of the lakes in back of our house. They are so fun to watch when the dive-bomb the water! Great shots.

Thanks, would have loved to catch the dive bombing, but you get almost no notice and it’s over.

We have a pair that return every year to nest on the shore of “our” lake in northern Minnesota. Each year I hope that I will get a chance to catch one of them, but so far I’ve been foiled. They can be seen flitting around out over the water, but they are exceedingly wary of anyone trying to approach them when perched. What great luck for you!

Thanks. Very often they see me before I see them and they fly off.

One of my favorite birds. It took me years to catch my first one. Finally last year found one that would ignore me. Spent a day with him. Went down last week and he is gone. Great catch!

Thank you. I spent a lot of time last year trying but it always saw me first.

Wish I could find the kingfishers on our canal again! They moved after part of the canal was dredged and the banks were repaired. I was having such fun watching them 🙂

I know the feeling, repairs etc affect the wild life.

They do indeed! These had to be done for the sake of the wildlife though. The banks had totally given way along a stretch of canal and it was silting up badly! Other parts of the bank were on the verge of collapse too. The canal is actually an Area of Special Scientific Interest so the work was done as carefully and with as much consideration as possible. Keeping the waters healthy is vital to the whole ecology of the canal. They did a fantastic job 🙂 I will find the kingfishers again………eventually 😉

Great flight shot! I was lucky enough to photograph one perched, a pose from which one may see how the bird’s head and beak dominate its body.

Wonderful photos! I was able to get a couple shots of one I saw this summer, but unfortunately I have not seen him again. Thanks for sharing another great series of shots.

Thank you. Last year I went back as often as I could to a spot where I saw one, it always saw me first and left before I got a shot!

Many great shots of this cute little bird. It’s different from what we’ve been calling a kingfisher in Michigan. I better look mine up and see if I’m calling it by the right name. Ours tends to have longer legs, lays it’s eggs on the ground and runs along the beach making a lot of noise if we get near.

Very nice. I’ve read other bird photographers lamenting how difficult it is to get good kingfisher captures. I’ve still yet to even see one, though I know they’re in the area.

They fly very fast, have great vision, we know they are about because of their unique chattering song.
